IF YOU HAVE ANY OF THESE CONDITIONS, CHECK OUT OUR CLINICAL TRIALS OPPORTUNITIES IN THESE CATEGORIES:
Heart Failure
What is heart failure? It’s a chronic, progressive and potentially deadly condition where the heart muscle is unable to keep up with our bodies’ demand for blood flow. Initially, symptoms such as shortness of breath, fatigue and angle swelling can be subtle and often attributed to non-heart-related conditions such as lung disease or depression.
Coronary Vascular Disease
Coronary Vascular Disease (CVD), also known as Coronary Artery Disease (CAD), is a progressive and chronic cardiovascular condition characterized by the narrowing or blockage of the coronary arteries. These arteries supply oxygen and nutrient-rich blood to the heart muscle, ensuring its proper functioning.
Cholesterol Disorders
Coronary Vascular Disease (CVD) is a progressive and chronic cardiovascular condition characterized by the narrowing or blockage of arteries to the heart, brain and extremities predisposing to heart attack, stroke and amputation. Symptoms can include chest discomfort, shortness of breath or leg pain with exertion.
Type II Diabetes
Type 2 diabetes is a chronic condition characterized by high levels of sugar (glucose) in the blood when the body becomes resistant to insulin or when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin. New treatments are being developed to normalize glucose levels and prevent cardiac, vascular and kidney disease.
Obesity
Obesity is a chronic medical condition characterized by an excessive accumulation of body fat that may cause adverse effects on health. Novel treatments are now being evaluated that may not only lead to weight loss but also to the prevention of related stroke, heart attack and heart failure.
Hypertension
Hypertension or high blood pressure is defined by a blood pressure in a medical setting greater than 130/80. New drugs are in clinical trial to more effective and safer than current treatments with a focus on treating patients with resistant hypertension requiring more than three drugs and those with more advanced stages of chronic kidney disease.
Please note that we ask that you bring the following to your first clinical trial/screening visit (if available):
Your currently prescribed medication bottles and a complete list of all the medications you are taking, dose and frequency
The most recent blood test results from your physicians
Primary care physician medical notes from your most recent visit
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is the National Heart Institute?
We are a clinical research center with world-class physician investigators and clinical research coordinators working to find better treatments for a range of cardiovascular and metabolic disorders.
Who is Dr. Norman Lepor, NHI’s Founder and Director?
Dr. Norman Lepor is a graduate of The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and double-boarded by the American Board of Internal Medicine for Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Disease. He has been a Principal Investigator on over sixty clinical trials over the last twenty-five years, many of which have been published in the most prestigious peer-reviewed medical journals and have had a very positive impact on a variety of cardiovascular conditions. Dr. Lepor is joined by a group of physician sub-investigators who support the research efforts and are dedicated to improving the health of not just their patients but those around the world.
What does NHI’s coordinating staff do?
Our team is responsible for arranging patient research visits, gathering important background medical information on all research participants, assessing for adverse events and side effects, dispensing research medication, and ensuring that research protocols are adhered to under the direction of the physician investigators.
Why does NHI focus on cardiovascular disease?
Cardiovascular disease is the number one killer of Americans and a leader in causing disability. Most people have family or friends who have died of cardiovascular disease, suffered a heart attack or stroke, needed an amputation, or are dealing with hypertension, heart failure, arrhythmias, obesity, or diabetes. As healthcare professionals, it's critical that we find new and better treatments to treat and prevent cardiovascular disease. NHI is committed to that goal, and we have a record of getting results.
What is a clinical trial?
A clinical trial is a process to find better and safer treatments. NHI provides clinical trials for cardiovascular and metabolic diseases such as coronary artery disease, heart failure, cholesterol disorders, hypertension, arrhythmias, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, and obesity. These trials are approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and supervised by outside clinical research monitors and NHI investigators to help guarantee patient safety.
